6 Smart Things to Think About Before Buying a Shed Kit

Mark Jacob · September 18, 2025 · Leave a Comment

A shed kit might look like a simple weekend project. Pick a size, choose a colour, build it, done. Right?

Not quite. If you want to avoid wasted time, unexpected costs, and regrets down the track, there are a few things worth thinking through before you buy. Because while a shed kit can be a great investment, making the wrong choice can lead to long-term headaches.

Let’s walk through the six key things to consider before you make a decision.

  1. What Are You Actually Using It For?

Start with your real purpose. Not the one you think sounds good, but the honest, practical reason you’re buying it.

Ask yourself:

Will it store tools, equipment, or vehicles?

Do you need it to double as a workspace or hobby area?

Is it more about freeing up room in your garage or home?

The reason this matters is because the intended use determines everything else – from the size and layout, to the door type, window placement, and even the flooring.

For example, if you plan to use it as a workshop, you’ll probably want ventilation, electrical access, and natural light. But if you’re using it just for lawn gear, those extras might not be worth the added cost.

Being crystal clear on the use case now means you won’t end up needing another shed in a year.

  1. Shed kits prices – Are You Budgeting Properly?

The price of shed kits can vary more than most people expect. And it’s not just about size. Materials, durability, customisation, and delivery options can all influence cost.

When you start comparing shed kits prices, don’t just look at the base price. Ask what’s included and what’s not. Some kits look cheap but require you to pay extra for essentials like flooring, locks, or roofing. Others may include everything upfront but cost more to ship or assemble.

Also, think long-term. A cheaper shed might seem like a win now, but if it’s not weatherproof, secure, or durable enough, it could need repairs or even full replacement sooner than you’d like. Spending a little more at the start can save money and stress later.

  1. Size and Space – Bigger Isn’t Always Better

It’s tempting to go for the biggest shed that fits in your yard, just in case you “need the extra space.” But bigger can mean more expense, more maintenance, and more time to build.

Start by measuring your available area, but also think about:

  • Access paths. Can you easily get in and out?
  • Setback rules. Are there local council regulations that limit shed placement?
  • Shade and drainage. Will your chosen spot stay dry and cool enough throughout the year?

It’s smart to leave a little clearance around the shed too, especially if you’ll be painting, cleaning, or doing occasional repairs.

As for the internal space, map out what’s going inside. If it’s for bikes, tools, or boxes, lay those items out on the ground to get a visual sense of how much room they actually take up. You might be surprised how efficient a well-designed smaller shed can be.

  1. Council Approval – Don’t Assume You’re Exempt

Some people assume small sheds don’t require approval. Others think “it’s in my backyard, I’ll just build it.”

That approach can cause problems, especially if there are boundary rules, height restrictions, or site-specific requirements in your area.

Check what permits (if any) are needed before you build. Even if the shed kit company says it “usually” doesn’t need approval, confirm it with your local council. Fines and removal orders are a painful way to learn the rules.

Also, if you’re in a strata complex or shared property, get written permission first. Neighbours may not love a bright metal box suddenly appearing next to their fence.

  1. Assembly and Delivery – Will You Need Help?

Some shed kits are DIY-friendly, with clear instructions and minimal tools required. Others assume you’re comfortable using power tools, levelling ground, and understanding technical drawings.

Don’t overestimate your own building confidence. Think about:

Who will help you assemble it?

Do you have the tools and space needed to build it safely?

Is the shed coming flat-packed, or in large panels?

Delivery is another factor. A kit might be the perfect fit in theory, but if it turns up with heavy steel parts and no way to get them to your backyard, you’re in for a rough day.

If you’re not up for building it yourself, consider the cost and availability of hiring someone. This can affect your overall budget and timing.

    1. Materials and Weather Conditions

All sheds are not built the same. Some are designed for mild climates, while others can handle high winds, heavy rain, or harsh sun. If your region is prone to storms or humidity, this matters a lot.

Look closely at the material. Is it galvanised steel, timber, or something else? What sort of corrosion resistance does it offer? And is the roof designed to shed water effectively?

Also think about insulation and ventilation. If you’ll spend time inside the shed, or store temperature-sensitive items, these features make a big difference in comfort and performance.

Lastly, make sure the shed is anchored properly. Wind uplift is real, especially in open or exposed areas. The right anchoring kit is essential, not optional.

Make It Count

Buying a shed kit isn’t just about storage. Done right, it can increase your home’s functionality and even add value. But done poorly, it becomes a waste of money, time, and effort.

By considering these six factors, you’ll make a smarter choice that fits both your lifestyle and your property.
