Even though it has only recently emerged as a craft movement to discourage overpriced consumerism, DIY has really existed since the first humans stepped on the earth considering everything they did was DIY.
So in the end, DIY is just someone’s commitment to getting off their lazy butt and saving money by creating and doing things themselves. Of course, in our advanced world some things are better left to the professional. We can’t all be experts in everything.
